Accommodation in Heidelberg

Decentralized locations facilitate integration

Once they have registered in the Arrival Center at Patrick-Henry-Village, refugees in Baden-Württemberg are distributed by among the region’s urban and rural administrative districts. The city of Heidelberg has chosen not to house its refugees in mass accommodation for years, but to accommodate them in manageable units in the city’s neighborhoods. This concept has proved very effective. In decentralized accommodation, people are able to connect with life in their local neighborhood. This is the basis for successful integration.

Because the Arrival Center for Baden-Württemberg is located in Patrick Henry Village (PHV), Heidelberg is currently exempt from being allocated any more refugees. That doesn't apply to urkainian refugees. Accommodating refugees is not a voluntary service – it is a legal obligation that the city of Heidelberg has to comply with. Since the city council is keen to avoid housing refugees in sports halls or camps, it is renting additional accommodation from private owners in Heidelberg.
