Enjoying time together

Heidelberg is a good place to be for families with children. This is partly thanks to its excellent childcare and healthcare, which are second-to-none in Germany, and the ‘Families Campaign’ – an initiative run by the city together with numerous partners to represent and promote the interests of families.

But a family-friendly city also needs to offer attractive leisure facilities to encourage parents and children to enjoy time together. Examples of family-friendly outings in Heidelberg include family trips to the playground,  a swim in one of Heidelberg’s many swimming pools, a visit to Heidelberg Zoo, an outing to the city forest with its many themed paths and adventure trails, or the municipal environmental education program Natürlich Heidelberg (Naturally Heidelberg) – a series of year-round informative excursions – some aimed specifically at families – led by woodland ecology experts. Getting outdoors is a great way for the whole family to relax and recharge their batteries.

But what if it rains? Wet-weather options include a visit to the Public Library. With its books, newspapers, media, quiet reading corners and café, families will want to come back again and again. For those able to plan a little further ahead, the cultural center Kulturfenster Heidelberg has put together a leisure program aimed especially at families. A trip together to the theater or cinema is another family favorite. Families will love the multi-award-winning children’s cinema at the Gloria & Gloriette theater, and the Youth Theater at the Stadtheater.
