Institute for Forensic Medicine at the Heidelberg University Hospital/walk-in clinic for victims of violence

The forensic walk-in clinic of the Institute for Forensic Medicine in Heidelberg provides examinations according to state-of-the-art forensic standards. A specially trained team of experts is on hand around the clock. One of a kind in Baden-Württemberg, this clinic is designed to provide easy access to help and contributes to detecting violence and solving violent crimes. In many cases, examinations conducted by doctors with special forensic training enable objective diagnoses and the collection of evidence. It is important that examinations be made as early as possible, especially following domestic violence, strangulation, when there is a suspicion of child abuse, child molestation, rape, violence against the elderly or other acts of assault including fist fights or assault with a dangerous weapon or item. The walk-in clinic is open to anyone regardless of age, gender, ethnic background, nationality, or financial means. Even if you don't (or don’t yet) wish to file a report with the police, you can still ask to be examined.

The walk-in clinic can be phoned 24 hours a day on +49 152 54648393. An examination can be conducted any time after making an appointment by phone. There is usually no waiting time. The doctors in the forensic walk-in clinic are subject to doctor-patient confidentiality.

The Clinic for Psychiatry and Psychotherapy at Heidelberg University Hospital

The Clinic for Psychiatry and Psychotherapy at Heidelberg University Hospital has a variety of treatments available to people for the whole spectrum of mental illness. One of the clinic's areas of focus is to enable people who have experienced violence to receive psychotherapy treatment as either an in-patient or within the context of a partial hospitalisation programme; this allows patients to speak about their experiences and work through them in a safe environment as well as to receive tangible help. People who develop severe depression, anxiety or post-traumatic stress disorder following trauma can also get help at our institute's walk-in clinic as needed. In an acute crisis situation, we are ultimately there for women living in Heidelberg to set up an emergency plan and to find them initial help. Whether as part of in-patient or out-patient treatment, the social workers at our clinic will work closely with GUIDE4YOU in order to counsel, advise and support affected women.

Intervention agency for women and children (Interventionsstelle)

At the Intervention agency, we counsel women and girls who are experiencing violence in their relationship and who urgently need help. The intervention agency acts as a coordinating office and drop-in centre for women and children as part of the Protection Against Violence Act and when seeking restraining orders. Stalking is another area of focus. Interpreters can be brought in when needed.
We also counsel girls and young women whose ability to live a self-determined life is being prevented by their families and/or who are threatened with a marriage against their will.

We provide support by:
- Counselling by phone and in person
- Contacting public authorities, administrative offices and attorneys
- Providing information on potential legal steps
- Clarifying the situation of any children involved
- Arranging further assistance

Domestic violence comes in many forms. Nearly all forms of domestic violence represent acts that may be punished by law; domestic violence itself does not constitute a specific crime. Domestic violence covers a great number of different crimes that require official police involvement. Domestic violence is always more than just a private or personal concern. Article 2 of the German constitution stipulates: "Every person shall have the right to life and physical integrity. Freedom of the person shall be inviolable." This applies regardless of how old people are or what sort of relationship they have with each other. The right to be free of bodily harm applies at home, behind closed doors, just as it does elsewhere. This is why it is especially important for those affected by domestic violence to utilise the help available. Call the police on 110, especially if you are under any acute threat. The police will protect you and can also order perpetrators to leave and stay away from the home for several days.
