Heidelberg’s newest district benefits from short distances within the quarter and to the city center. More distant destinations are also easily accessible thanks to the extensive public transport network and proximity to the central railway station.

Integrated public transport network

The public transport network in Heidelberg is closely integrated. There are numerous buses and trams linking individual districts with each other and with the city center. A new 2.2-km stretch of track with three barrier-free tram stops connects Bahnstadt to the Heidelberg tram network. Line 22 takes Bahnstadt residents to Bismarckplatz and Heidelberg’s old town in a matter of minutes. From late 2018, Line 26 will also connect Bahnstadt to the tram network. Bus routes 33 and 721 also stop in Bahnstadt and offer additional connecting routes.

Getting around by bicycle

The bicycle is the vehicle of choice among Heidelbergers. That’s why the city is rapidly expanding the existing 120 kilometers of cycleways – including in Bahnstadt, where 3.5 kilometers of cycle paths are to be created. There are already numerous cycleways and footpaths linking the new district with other parts of the city, and cyclists can get to the city center in around ten minutes. By the end of 2019, the Gneisenaubrücke bridge will provide cyclists and pedestrians with a new crossing over the railway tracks to Bergheim. The bridge is a central component in the key cycle path route linking southern districts of the city with Neuenheimer Feld.

Just a few minutes’ walk to the central station

The central station is just a stone’s throw from Bahnstadt. Living in Heidelberg, but working in Walldorf, Stuttgart, Frankfurt or Mainz? That’s no problem for Bahnstadt residents. With access to regional and long-distance trains, commuters can easily get to destinations in the region as well as those further afield. Moreover, the OEG line also stops outside the central station on its Heidelberg-Mannheim-Weinheim route.

Access to highways and airports

The A5 highway can be reached by car in less than ten minutes. It is a 20-minute drive to Mannheim and Walldorf, 40 minutes to Karlsruhe, and 50 minutes to Frankfurt International Airport. For those without a car of their own, Bahnstadt has four car sharing points owned by provider Stadtmobil.

In view of the increasing popularity of electric vehicles, the city is advising builders to install the necessary facilities for charging points in private underground car parks. Bahnstadt’s first public charging points are currently in preparation.
