On December 2, 1924, the operetta “Der Studentenprinz in Heidelberg” had its world premiere on Broadway in New York. The play by composer Sigmund Romberg, based on a play by Wilhelm Meyer-Förster, has been filmed three times since the 1930s. A melodramatic love story in the typical setting of the Heidelberg fraternities with their drinking and love songs, the play quickly became a worldwide success. Performances such as at the Heidelberg Castle Festival show how popular the material still is today.

SWR author Eberhard Reuß has captured the magic of this successful production in a documentary film, which we will be presenting this evening at the MTC. Together with the author and the program director of the German-American Institute Heidelberg, Dr. Lena Jöhnk, Uwe Wenzel will discuss the cultural and social background of this success on both sides of the Atlantic.
